Not Giving Up while On the Unbeaten Path

It happens to the best of us when pursuing our idea of success. We start to feel unsure, alone, and even a little lost. Then we start thinking about giving up.

First things first, you're in unfamiliar territory, and being unsure is normal. Second, keep in mind there are likely fewer people because you're one of the few who didn't give up. Bravo. And finally, you're never really alone because we're here for you. (Really. We're small enough to be only an email away.) However, if you're feeling like this, the High Five Tips are for you.

High Five: 5 Tips For Hanging In There

Get your mind right.

It's much easier to take action when your behavior and beliefs line up. Lip service and action aren't always enough. We want action that lines up with beliefs, values, and something stirring up inside. So get clear on your beliefs, values, and the emotion you want to feel. The same should apply to the people you want to impact and the individuals around you.

Rest. It's okay.

Being emotionally, psychologically, and physically broken is likely not your idea of success. It's catchy and sometimes motivating to put money, hustle, or career over everything. But is it sustainable? Not likely. Yes, hard work is usually a part of the process (often harder than we can imagine). Yet, life's ups and downs plus emotions still happen. So, rest when you need to. Your version of success will likely still be there waiting for you.

Procrastinate the right way.

Yes, there is a right way or at least a better way than mindlessly scrolling then wondering where the time went. Instead, we could exercise, connect with a friend, write out a list of reasons why what we're doing matters. Or try out the free MMP My Story tool for a push. And if it's going to be mindless procrastination, at least set a timer. Just don't feel bad. We procrastinate not because we're lazy but because of fear, uncertainty, and even boredom.

Get honest.

With whom exactly? Mirror mirror on the wall…YOU. The easiest person to lie to is yourself. Sometimes lies come in the form of excuses. Sometimes as problems that may or may not apply to you. A problem might be real, but is it really the reason why XYZ isn't happening? Have you exhausted all other options? Find your lie. Reveal your truth and the way forward.

Give back.

Don't feel so great? Be great to others. In the book How to Win Friends and Influence People, the author points out the easiest way to elevate your mood is to do something kind for someone else. So yes, to see a little more light in your world, it helps to create it in another's.
